Ballymun consists of five separate neighbourhoods, each with their own local facilities and a variety of house designs. Building it is the equivalent of building a town the size of Sligo. There will be 30,000 inhabitants and it is being designed with the support and active involvement of the local community. The project will take ten years to complete. Construction workers went on site in early 2000 and the first residents moved into their new houses in October 2001. The residents worked closely with the architects designing them. The first two tower blocks to be demolished in 2002, are Thomas McDonagh and Patrick Pearse Towers.
