Cllr Royston Brady - Euro Candidate for Dublin

roystonbrady.jpgGive Dublin a Fresh Start In Europe - Lord Mayor, Royston Brady

In the thirty-one years since Ireland joined the EU on January 1st 1973 we have witnessed an amazing transformation of the country and of our capital city.

Back then Dublin was a city of high unemployment, massive emigration, low quality housing, derelict sites, low third-level participation rates and a tourism industry just beginning to really grow.

While we still have many big challenges facing us in Dublin, we now have the biggest population ever, the highest employment ever and the best city economy ever, with billions being spent on commercial and residential developments, a booming tourism industry and thousands of students in second and third level education.

Dublin has been transformed through the hard work of the slightly older generation and the brilliant involvement of the Irish in Europe. We are Europe's biggest exporter of software, and we have gained a great reputation as a nation which uses its talents and abilities very effectively.

On May 1st during the Irish Presidency, ten new countries will joyfully join the EU family, seeking the fair land of great opportunity for their citizens, just as we did over thirty years ago. Europe begins a new chapter. The new accession states begin a new era. And Dublin City begins a new phase in its vital development.

I want to represent your Dublin and my Dublin in Europe, to emulate our past success, and to speak out strongly on every issue of concern to Dubliners.
