Councillor Mary White
Cllr. Mary White, who was elected Deputy Leader of the Green Party in 2001, narrowly missed out on a Dáil seat in 2002's General Election. Mary first ran for election in June 1997 polling 3116 first preference votes in the General Election. In the 1999 Local Elections Mary topped the poll in Borris,Carlow being the only candidate to reach the quota. Topping the poll in a rural three seater was a major achievement for a Green candidate. Mary is the Green Party's Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs spokesperson.

Mary who lives in Borris, County Carlow, is a passionate and articulate debater. Mary is married with one daughter. A graduate (Modern Languages) of Trinity College, Dublin she has edited "A Walking Guide to the Blackstairs" (with Joss Lynam )and written "Environment, Mining and Politics". She is a keen hill walker, linguist and organic grower.

The Green Party European selection convention followed the announcement by existing Leinster Green MEP Nuala Ahern that she will not contest next June's election. Nuala Ahern was first elected to the European Parliament in 1994 and was re-elected in 1999 when she successfully defended her seat increasing her vote by taking the second seat in Leinster. Mary is determined to succeed Nuala Ahern as the Green Party MEP for the East (formerly Leinster) constituency.
